How to Measure Brand Visibility in ChatGPT and Gemini

Measure ChatGPT and Gemini visibility with explicit answer-level denominators, preserved failures, verified recommendations, and auditable source records.

Direct answer: Brand visibility in ChatGPT and Gemini should be measured as a repeatable sample of answers, not as a single ranking. Define priority buyer questions, hold market and prompt conditions as constant as possible, capture whether the brand appears, score how accurately it is described, record its recommendation position and citations, and compare the same measures over time.

Why AI visibility is not one number

Traditional search analytics have mature concepts such as impressions, clicks, position, and conversion. Generated answers are less uniform. The same question can produce different wording, sources, shortlists, and levels of detail depending on the interface, model, date, location, account context, and whether live search or grounding is available.

That means a dashboard that reports “the brand ranks number two in ChatGPT” without defining the prompt and sampling method is incomplete. A useful measurement system separates observable facts from interpretation and keeps enough context to reproduce the test.

Keep two records: what happens to your website in search, and what an answer actually says about your brand. Google announced dedicated generative AI performance reports for Search Console in June 2026; its August 31 update says those insights have rolled out worldwide. The announcement describes URL impressions, pages, countries, devices for Search, and dates. Those observations do not establish whether a particular answer recommended your company. Inspect the reports available in your property, record their filters and date range, and keep consumer answer evidence alongside them.

A crawl or indexing receipt answers a different question again: whether a submission was received or a page was processed. It is not an observed recommendation.

Start with a decision-journey prompt set

Do not begin with hundreds of loosely related prompts. Begin with the questions that influence a buyer's movement from problem awareness to supplier selection.

Use separate panels for different purposes. An unbranded discovery panel asks for providers, tools, alternatives, or buying advice without naming your company. A branded accuracy panel checks what the system knows about your business. An educational panel tests explanations and evidence. Publish each panel's result separately; an educational question may have no reason to name any vendor.

Questions worth investigating include:

  • Category questions: “What is generative engine optimization (GEO) software?”
  • Problem questions: “How can a B2B brand improve visibility in AI answers?”
  • Comparison questions: “Which approaches are best for monitoring AI citations?”
  • Vendor questions: “Who provides GEO audits for US market entry?”
  • Evidence questions: “What should an AI visibility audit include?”
  • Risk questions: “What are the limitations of generative engine optimization?”
  • Branded questions: “What does Brand X do?” and “Is Brand X suitable for this use case?”

Tag every prompt with a market, language, funnel stage, buyer role, product family, and business priority. A US English procurement prompt should not be blended with a German-language informational prompt as if they represented the same opportunity.

Record the test conditions

For every sample, store at least:

FieldWhat to retain
Platform and exact surfaceChatGPT consumer web search, Gemini App, Google AI Overview, or Google AI Mode; API tests stay separate
Collection timeFull timestamp and time zone
QuestionImmutable ID, version, exact text, buyer intent, and whether it names the brand
Intended market and languageThe market requested by the question and the answer language
Observed environmentDisplayed location or independently checked region; unknown if not checked
Account and contextNon-identifying account label, signed-in state, visible personalization settings, fresh conversation or follow-up
Model and modeVisible model label and search state; unknown when the interface does not disclose them
Complete responseFull answer, visible sources, screenshot or compliant export, and its observation ID
OutcomeComplete answer, collection failure, login barrier, rate limit, or AI Overview not triggered
AssessmentMention, explicit recommendation, entity match, supported reasons, reviewer, and linked evidence

The objective is not to remove all variability. It is to document enough context that a later comparison is meaningful. Typing "United States" does not establish a US network location. A new chat does not by itself prove personalization is absent: OpenAI documents that memory can affect search query rewriting and location can influence results. Record what was actually visible or checked, and leave the rest unknown.

Use an answer-level scorecard

1. Brand presence

Record whether the brand appears anywhere in the answer. Presence is binary for each sample, but it can be aggregated as a percentage across a defined prompt set.

Answer-level mention rate = complete eligible answers mentioning the brand / all complete eligible answers in that panel and surface.

Keep the unit consistent. If 12 questions each receive three scheduled samples, you have up to 36 answers, not 12. Label a separate question-coverage metric when the question is the unit: questions with at least one mention divided by questions with a complete answer. "At least one" coverage depends on the number of attempts, so disclose that number and the repeat schedule.

Completion rate = complete eligible answers / scheduled attempts. Retain failed attempts in the completion ledger, not as fabricated no-brand answers. A complete answer that omits your brand remains a valid negative. An answer explaining that no supplier fits the requirements can also be valid; do not discard it because it lacks a shortlist.

For a hypothetical single-surface discovery panel, suppose 12 attempts produce 10 complete answers and two collection failures. Four answers mention the brand, but only two qualify as recommendations. Report mention rate 4/10 (40%), qualified recommendation rate 2/10 (20%), and completion 10/12 (83.3%). These are illustrative counts, not Xindar results or a representative estimate of all users. None of these metrics is market share.

2. Qualified recommendation rate

Within a preselected unbranded buyer-decision panel, divide qualified recommendations by all complete eligible answers on that surface. Keep complete answers without a shortlist in the denominator. Record neutral mentions and recommendation order separately.

A background mention, a source link, and an explicit shortlist recommendation are different observations. Define a qualified recommendation before collecting data: the answer identifies the correct company or product, recommends it for the requested decision, and gives reasons that survive a check against current evidence. A similarly named business or a recommendation justified by a fabricated capability fails that test. Keep the original answer and the rejection reason.

Record order only if the answer supplies an ordered list or an explicit preference. Being mentioned first in prose does not automatically mean the system ranked a provider first. Recommendation order is an answer property, not a durable search position.

3. Description accuracy

Create a small rubric based on verified brand facts:

  • correct company and product name;
  • correct category;
  • current product capability;
  • correct target customer or market;
  • no material outdated or fabricated claim.

Score each field as correct, partly correct, incorrect, or absent. Keep the underlying evidence next to the rubric so reviewers do not grade from memory.

4. Citation presence and quality

Capture every visible source citation, then classify it:

  • owned source, such as an official product or documentation page;
  • independent authoritative source;
  • industry publication or directory;
  • community discussion;
  • irrelevant, low-quality, or outdated source.

Citation presence matters, but source relevance and support matter more. Open the cited page, identify the passage supporting the claim, and distinguish publisher self-description from independent testing. A related link is not automatically evidence for every sentence. Google's Gemini source guidance says that sources and related links are not present in every response. No visible source means no source was captured; it does not establish which internal process produced the answer.

5. Competitive inclusion

Record which competitors appear for the same prompt and how they are framed. Useful fields include first mention, shortlist inclusion, claimed strength, cited source, and whether the comparison uses a criterion your site does not address.

This turns competitor monitoring into a content and evidence backlog rather than a vanity leaderboard.

6. Answer risk

Flag statements that could mislead a buyer: wrong pricing, discontinued products, inaccurate availability, unsupported superlatives, confused company identities, or omitted compliance boundaries. Give high-risk prompts a faster review cadence.

Build a baseline and a cadence

  1. Start with a panel small enough to review every answer and its sources. Size it around distinct buyer decisions, markets, and products; a prompt count alone does not make a sample representative.
  2. Run an initial sample using documented conditions.
  3. Have a human reviewer validate brand facts, recommendation context, and citations.
  4. Freeze the baseline prompt IDs and scoring rubric.
  5. Repeat priority prompts weekly or monthly according to business risk.
  6. Add new prompts as products, competitors, and buyer language change, but do not silently rewrite the baseline.
  7. Compare the same question versions, surfaces, account conditions, and scheduled repeat counts. Keep changes of account, model, mode, region, and personalization visible rather than silently pooling them.
  8. Set repeat dates and stopping rules before collecting. Do not regenerate an unfavorable answer until a brand appears, then report only the successful attempt.

A major product launch may justify daily monitoring for a small high-risk cluster. Evergreen educational prompts may only need monthly sampling.

For before-and-after reporting, retain matched question IDs and show each platform separately. Uneven repeat counts can let a frequently sampled question dominate an answer-level average. Either keep repeats balanced or also publish an equal-weight question-level summary with its weighting rule. Several runs of one question do not become several independent buyer intents. Small, correlated samples support a bounded observation, not a precise estimate of the entire market.

An improvement after a page edit does not establish that the edit caused it. Other sources, model changes, account context, and ordinary answer variation may explain the difference. Record the intervention and its actual publication time, then run the pre-arranged comparable checks.

Connect visibility to actions

A measurement program is valuable when each finding has an owner and a response.

  • Brand absent, competitors present: review category clarity, comparison coverage, and external source authority.
  • Brand present, description wrong: correct the canonical source and align entity signals.
  • Brand recommended without an owned citation: inspect whether the cited independent evidence is accurate and sufficient. An owned citation is not a requirement for a valid recommendation; repair missing documentation when the reasons cannot be verified.
  • Brand cited but not recommended: examine whether evidence answers the decision criteria in the prompt.
  • Answer varies sharply by market: separate market-specific pages, sources, and prompt sets.
  • Risk statement detected: publish a clear correction source and monitor the prompt more frequently.

Keep Google search surfaces and site analytics distinct

For Google AI Overviews, save whether an overview appeared before scoring its contents. Report the trigger rate across scheduled searches, then report brand inclusion among the captured overviews. A search without an overview is "not triggered," not an answer containing zero brand mentions. Show those events in the coverage report so a conditional inclusion rate cannot conceal low availability.

Keep ordinary search links, AI Overview answers, and AI Mode answers in separate rows. A standard result for your website does not prove an AI recommendation. Google explains that its AI search features use the established Search eligibility and technical practices; eligibility does not guarantee selection for a particular question.

Search Console's URL impressions and clicks, where available in the relevant report, can help diagnose discovery and traffic. They cannot reconstruct an uncaptured consumer conversation or prove that a specific answer caused a sale. Use existing consented analytics and CRM evidence for visits and leads, record unknown referrers, and distinguish observed attribution from causal impact.

Common measurement mistakes

The most common mistake is taking one screenshot and presenting it as a trend. A second is mixing branded prompts, where visibility is expected, with non-branded discovery prompts. A third is changing wording or location between periods without labeling the change. A fourth is scoring every mention as positive. A fifth is failing to retain the cited sources that explain why an answer may have changed.

Automation can collect observations, but human review remains necessary for meaning, accuracy, recommendation context, and evidence quality.

Frequently asked questions

How many prompts are enough?

Use the smallest panel that covers the decisions you intend to study and can be reviewed consistently. Document omitted markets and buyer roles. There is no universal prompt count that makes a convenience panel representative; expand coverage when a missing intent matters, and preserve the original panel for comparison.

Can ChatGPT and Gemini scores be compared directly?

Compare them cautiously. Interfaces and source behaviors differ. Keep a common business rubric, but report each platform separately before producing any combined view.

Should prompts be run from a logged-in account?

Document the chosen method and keep it consistent. Record visible memory or personalization settings as well as conversation history. Keep fresh-conversation tests separate from realistic follow-up journeys, and do not label a test anonymous or US-based without evidence for that condition.

What is a meaningful improvement?

Define it before optimization. Examples include higher presence across a priority cluster, more accurate descriptions, increased recommendation inclusion, stronger source quality, or fewer high-risk errors. Avoid declaring success from one changed answer.

What to request from a monitoring supplier

Ask for one record you can audit from screen to export: the exact question, full answer, visible citation URLs, time, actual consumer surface or API label, and the assessment behind each score. Check that an unfavorable answer and a collection failure remain visible in the export. Ask how account changes, model labels, missing sources, data retention, and later corrections are recorded.

Apply the same acceptance test to [Semvi by Xindar](/products/geowatch). A product description establishes what the supplier says it offers; inspecting an actual account export establishes what that record contains. A brand score without its underlying observations leaves the buyer unable to check either.
